In all my years of following the Lord, walking alongside others who are following the Lord, and working with teenagers, THE most common prayer request is, "I/We need to know what to do." It's rarely spoken with an air of excitement or hopefulness, but typically kind of exhaled with a tinge (or more) of anxiety. Questions about relationships, career choices and college, to adopt or foster, tithing and giving, or the kicker--How do I deal with my awful teenager who acts just like me?
And for the very most part, most of us just want to do the right thing.
And for the very most part, we just don't know what the right thing is in that specific circumstance.
When we talk about God's will for our lives there are two basic categories; the general and the specific. The problem we often face is that we want information from God about His specific will for our lives when we are not in line with His general will for our lives.
This might sound like an oversimplification but believe me, a lifestyle of following God's general will for us is just that, a lifestyle. It takes dedication, perseverance, and death to self. It changes every aspect of a follower's day, habits, and hope and dreams.
Can God speak to people who are not following His will? Of course, don't be silly, He's God and He can do whatever He wants (I think Paul is a pretty sufficient example of that!). But for the most part, He trusts some people more with His whispers. 1 Thessalonians 2:4 "...just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who examines our hearts. Throughout scripture we see Him bringing a word to people who, while not perfect, follow a lifestyle of striving for God's will.
First we'll take a look at the general will of God in the Word and what that looks like in the modern life. Then we will work on some simple strategies for positioning us to hear the whispers of the Spirit for the specific will of God in our lives.
As a lifestyle of following the general will of God we love the Lord with all our heart. We can see where our devotion lies based on where our treasure is. Matthew 6:21 "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Following the will of God means we spend our money and time on the Kingdom. Where does your money go? Where does your time go? If someone were to follow me for a day, without knowing me and without any of my family members in the film, it would be clear by the days end that my affection lies with my husband, my kids, and my students. I am always thinking of what I can pick up for them at the store that would be special (my hubs is the easiest person to please so fried pork skins and guacamole will light that man up for a week). I'm thinking about fun things we can do after school as a family, folding and putting away laundry. In class I pour time and money into making lessons active and entertaining.
Now, we also spend a ton of money (too much) on phones, wifi, computer stuff, etc. Is that eating into our affection for the Lord? I'm pretty sure it is. This is a perfect example of how not following the general will of God will impact hearing His voice on the specific. If I'm sucked into my phone and spending money, time and energy on it than I am consequently not spending that money, time and energy on the Kingdom and my attention is divided.
My mom has been the Sunday school superintendent for her small congregation in rural Minnesota for years (I'm sure she will correct me but it's at least 20). She spends time and money in this area which shows her love for the Lord. She also spends time in prayer every morning. God is so good to speak to her specifically about what she can do with the Christmas program or different object lessons and songs she can do with the kids. From being in line with the general will of God to love him with her whole heart He is faithful to speak on the specific. This has been true for everything in her life from where to go to college, what degree to get, where to work, who to work with. Once, when we were kids and she went back to college and was going to be commuting back and forth to the Twin Cities (a long way from northern Minnesota), she saw a new brown Ford Taurus and God told her that would be the car He was going to provide for her to drive. A few months later mom was driving that car.
The other thing my parents have always done regardless of where they were at financially? Tithe. And believe me, times have been hard. Cash money on a diary farm does not grow on trees nor can it be baled like hay. But they have always loved God with their whole hearts in tithing. Following the general will of God in tithing, as a part of loving Him, shows up in the specific all of the time. First, any offer/risk/opportunity that is on the table for Chris and I in business or our personal lives that would involve not being able to tithe is an instant "no." Boom. Done. Specific word from God right there. Also, though, (and do not hear this as a healthy wealthy and blessed thing please) things just seem to be more clear all-around when tithing and giving are non-negotiable. We don't tithe and give to have and easier life, or to hold money as a ransom to hear God's voice. That being said, the Lord will withhold the little whispers about money when we don't listen to the blaring instructions about money.
As a lifestyle of following the general will of God we love the Lord with all our soul. Where loving God with your heart has to do with our affection, loving God with all our soul has to do with who we are. Of course the Greek word for soul "psyche" is the entire basis of the study of psychology, personality and why we act the way we do. The Hellenistic Greek society believed that the soul was the "essence" of a person. The Hebrew word for soul, "nephesh" is closely related to the word "nashamah" which means breath. I get goosebumps when I think about this. This just blows my mind. We are all so different, yet we are all made in the image of God. He breathed life into us on purpose, with a unique manifestation of Himself in every.single.human.on.earth. When we live our lives with confidence, not ashamed of who we are or how we were made, but embracing our quirks (of which I have several hundred) and our weirdness we not only glorify God, but we show Him love! How great is His plan that simply by being alive and breathing we show we love Him because he created us and is proud of the work of His hands =) Love the Lord with your personality--hide it under a bush oh NO.
What does this look like in life. Be yourself. There is so much pressure everywhere to be someone else. Sometimes it feels like the pressure is to be anyone else. Why are we so compelled to dislike things about our body and personality that others wish they had? This is like universal. I've walked into so many social situations telling myself, "Just be normal, Briana, just be normal for like two hours, you can do it." I found drinking helped a lot. If I "pre-gamed" as I called it back in the drinking days, I was able to talk about things like the weather and lipstick without changing the conversation to the devastation of the bee population, or screaming, "who gives a s**t?" in the middle of another woman's rant about lack of cashiers at Walmart.
As a matter of fact when I got saved this was one of the biggest sources of relief. After an early life of feeling like I didn't really fit in anywhere- I was too intense, too loud, too impulsive, too _______________. But when the Lord became real to me, I found the Kingdom was where I fit in. Just by being me (ok, admittedly, the cussing at people was a part of the equation that had to go). And think about it, if we are not following God's will on this and are preoccupied with fixing ourselves and molding ourselves into the shape of someone else, we are preoccupied from hearing God's voice. Time on the treadmill to be skinny takes over time in the Word. Time spent on hair and makeup or the perfect outfit to look a certain way or give off the perfect vibe takes over time spent in worship. None of those things are inherently wrong-ask yourself, honestly, "Is this who I am? Am I doing this for other people?"
As a lifestyle of following the general will of God we love the Lord with all our strength. In Deuteronomy we see both strength and might used is God's instruction to us and the Hebrew can be broken down in a couple different ways. One interpretation basically means "very" or "much." Love God with your very, your much. The extra that you have, the gusto, the intensity in ten cities (little Wayne's World quote for you there, you're welcome). The best breakdown, though, isn't in an interpretation but in a story. In 2 Samuel 6 we see David dancing in worship with all his might. They were finally bringing the Arc of the Covenant into the City of David, and there was leaping involved. His wife, Michal, told him that The King of Israel looked ridiculous- to which he replied, v.22 "I'll become even more undignified than this and will be humble in my own eyes." I love this example because the Hebrew here, "oz", for might, includes not only David's physical might in worship but also his political might. He was dancing, completely vulnerably, not just as a man after God's own heart, but as the King of Israel.
Do you use your whole body when you worship the God of the universe? Do you dance, lift your hands, sing out loud even if you don't feel like it or it might be embarrassing? I realize I have a leg up here because I don't care what people think about me in worship and I'm known as that weird crazy person anyway. But I've never understood how people can lose their s**t at a football game on Friday night and then turn around and sing the Revelation Song at the Sunday service with their arms folded? Last summer we were singing "Did You See the Mountains Tremble" and the words on the screen literally read, "Did you hear the people tremble, did you hear the singers roar?" So I followed the instructions and let out a tremble/roar "JESUS!!!" A lady came up to me after the service and said I scared her.
Do you use your political or social capitol to love the Lord? Are you in a position to influence policy in your family, business, or city? Do you use that might to be creative and glorify God by solving problems or coming up with creative solutions to difficult situations? There have been many times that my husband, as a business owner and boss, has used his power to bring glory to God. There are many times that this was a choice, not something he wanted to do. One instance I remember very well with was a young buck who was slacking off and stealing from the business. Chris really wanted to have a talk and give him another shot but the Lord was clear that he was to let the employee go. Chris was ripped up about it but wanted to be obedient to the leading of the Holy Spirit. So they had a talk, and he was fired. Months later, out of the blue, this guy calls Chris to say thank you for firing him-that he knew it was probably really hard for him to do but it was the bottom that he needed to hit to go into rehab and get help.
Recognize the connection in this story from the general to the specific. Chris was following the general will of God by loving God with his might as a business owner and boss, and when he asked for the specific will to be revealed the Holy Spirit was right there with an answer.
As a lifestyle of following the general will of God we love the Lord with all our mind. There is SO much encouragement in the Bible to think, to ponder, to question and study. It makes sense that this is a part of God's will for our lives because He did, in fact, give us a brain to think with (although from the lack basic adherence to turn signal etiquette in the Fargo/Moorhead area it might appear otherwise but I digress...). I love this one because it's easy for me-I'm a thinker to a fault. It's often been a bane to my existence because I tend to overthink the dumbest things on earth (my husband says this manifests in my obsession with the size, color and consistency of our children's' bowel movements but I think he should show a little more interest in the subject).
Maybe it's a musician/artist/writer thing because the Psalms are full of talk about loving God with all your mind:
Psalm 77:12I will consider all your works and meditate on all your mighty deeds." I really like the New Living Translation version which reads, "They are constantly on my thoughts, I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.
Psalm 143:5 I meditate on all Your works; I consider the work of Your hands.
Loving God with your whole mind means we don't take tradition or status quo for granted but we challenge our own long held beliefs that might not even line up with the Word. For me it means asking and asking and asking really hard questions from the Lord and waiting for answers, which I describe here.
My dad has been teaching Old Testament history for over twenty years at Rice Free Lutheran Church. It never ceases to amaze me how often he'll say, "Briana, explain this to me." And he'll read a section of scripture he has probably read hundreds of times that he doesn't get, or that he has a new question about. He is always doing the math (according to his calculations Methuselah died in the flood). He challenges members of his own political party to think if what they are fighting for is actually in the Bible, or if it's just the popular opinion of the week. This is a mind being used to love the Lord and bring glory to Him. Now, he also can never remember where he put his drill or chainsaw blades but perhaps that is the subject of another blog post.
When my dad ran into a really tough situation at work with a farm loan situation years back, the Holy Spirit was able to speak to my dad swiftly about how to creatively handle the situation using that same mind that he uses to love the Lord. This involved sifting through legal paperwork and petitions, researching land comparisons in the area and host of other brain-heavy quests. Because he is in the habit of following God's general will for his life and loving the Lord with his whole mind, he was in a position with the Father to be able to readily hear the specific on how to go through the legal process.
As a lifestyle of following the general will of God we love our neighbor as ourselves.
Jesus was clear about this, Church. Ours is the lifestyle of reaching out and helping people. We are to come to the rescue for widows and orphans, visit people in prison, love the "unlovable." The rich man asked for a specific word from God when he asked what he should do to inherit the kingdom of Heaven-and what did Jesus say? Sell everything you own and give the money to the poor.
This is the one area of following the general will of God that is most closely wrapped in the hearing his whispers about the specific. Loving people sacrificially, like he does, doesn't move God's heart-it changes us. When we focus our attention on others and their needs the very things we are asking the Lord about begin to shift. When He said "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you" the very things we want to be added change when we seek his kingdom first.
My third year in college I was looking for a job that was flexible but paid well and would give me some valuable experiences. I had been mostly waitressing until then. I knew I was spending way too much time, as a college student, thinking about myself, my studies, my hobbies, my my my. So I looked into some things I could do that had nothing to do with me-just blessing others. Long story short I ended up singing for a friend's dying mother at the nursing home and shortly thereafter leading group sing-alongs in the Alzheimer's unit of the local nursing home. It was not fun, but is was eye-opening and I knew working with vulnerable people was something the Lord was calling me to do. I was still looking for work and praying about what to do along those lines when the son of one of the residents offered me a job in one of his assisted-living facilities. I ended up working there for the next three years. The specific will of God was wrapped up in following the general will of God.
Listen. I have a long list of grievances against God. There are many times when I have rebelled. This is a daily pursuit, a lifestyle I am reaching for right along with you. I know the Father can open up the heavens right now and speak in a cloud of fire and thunder if He wants. That hasn't happened, yet, to me personally though I think it'd be awesome. Or terrifying...probably the latter. He is faithful to speak, and indeed already has through His Word about a ton of stuff. Let's focus on how to better love God today, and position ourselves to hear his whispers along the way =)

We're not going to launch into a breakdown of the ten commandments. Jesus did the legwork for us already and summarized all of that with:
"Love the Lord with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your strength, and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself."
This sentiment is clear throughout scripture, although my favorite is in Luke 10 when Jesus then launches into the Good Samaritan story lest there be any confusion over the who-is-my-neighbor debate.
